10,000 Swedes ran thru the weeds, pursued by one Norwegian.
« on: November 17, 2009, 07:41:11 AM »

The Swedes negotiated with the Mauser brothers to have a rifle built for the new round they had created. The 6.5 x 55 was designed to allow a grunt to carry more rounds and yet have an accurate effective weapon.
Mauser came up with the Model 1894/96 models. The first on the scene was the Model 1894 Carbine. It was made at Oberndorf and nicely done too. The the Swedes started making their own at the Carl Gustav works.
The unit in the photos is a Model '96 rifle, It  is pretty pristine, matching numbers and all that. Made in 1916 and considering its' condition probably never issued.
I have a customized Model 1894 Oberndorf model with a Hart barrel. Timney trigger and all the conversions to make it a pretty nice sporter. It will put 3 of the 160 grain round noses in one ragged hole at 100 yards. Even so I wish it was in original condition.
I will, if there is any interest post a pic of the Sporterized Model 1894 here.

I know any of the Model 1896 Mausers are collectables. Especially if they haven't been tinkered with. A lot of them have become sporters and although the 6.5x55 is a fine game round it is a shame to see them lost to the screwdriver when they are such a nice piece.
They are, in unaltered condition, useable for most military matches. They have a history of fine accuracy and are still used in the Nordic countries for matches.
Go shoot it. There is lots of ammo out there. Or if you load your own the 125 and 140 Nosler Partitions are good and the 129 grain spire point makes a pretty good 270 facsimile. Just can't load em as hot as the model 98 or any of the modern Mauser emulators.

my uncle gave it to us cuz he doesnt shoot anymore... he reloaded all the time, and theres a bunch of reloads to shoot as well.... its still a 6.5x55 and hasnt been messed with whatsoever...we also have a 1903 springfield...the 6.5 is extremely accurate for a rifle of that age...

I was 8 years old when Pearl was targeted. I wanted so bad to join up and go kill Krauts and  Japs. Forgive the appelations, but the propaganda of the times labelled them so. At any rate I have tried to collect some of the artifacts that changed the Political topography of the planet. Some are beautiful, some are ugly, but as with all tools the real personality is installed by the user. I would like to have an M1 and a G40 too but they are too pricey for me.

if all my old rifles could talk, i would be able to sit and listen for hours on end.
I will settle with the little gouges and bruises they wear proudly though, i love my old rifles and its a shame i cannot go shoot them more.
Now my Mosin is a different story though, its nearly brand new looking and nails the target nicely.
I will be scoping it with a rear sight mount and long eye relief scope soon, but keeping it in original condition forever.

I do want to find a full length 7.65 barrel for my MUTT though. Its sported and will have a scope resting atop of it soon too with a rear sight mount scope base. im not going to drill the Crest.

jabba, you should be able to pick up an M1 for anywere between about 550-1k, depending on grade and condition... i think my uncs was about 700, he will be giving that to us as well, but its his baby so it stays for a bit longer....that was the first 30-06 i ever shot...

Yeah I keep watching the DCM ad in the Rifleman. Seduction is the word.
Actually I have a friend on the WANG rifleteam that just may give an assist in rifle and ammo acquisition. They give him more than he has time to fire.
I especially like the 10x .22 stuff and the 38 wadcutters.

Looks kinda stubby like it might be a tanker model.

There's two models, the standard length one and the other designated as "tanker special".

so then technically it would be a carbine M1 garand right? i like the sound of a shorter version....might take some accuracy out at the long distances, but should be great for anything 500 and closer..

no, a tanker is even shorter yet than a carbine. there is virtually NO room in a tank for a rifle.

and m1 carbine is a completely different rifle from the m1 garand, i was just thinkin that usually shorter models are called carbines, i wonder how small these puppys really are then, might have a bit of belt to them if they go too short...BTW phish, beat up enfields are going for 500

That is a Tanker....

They can be picked up at a decent price (depending on your definition) if you keep your eyes peeled.

There was a gentleman walking around with a Springfield Armory Tanker at the WAC show a couple months ago for under $800.

It was pretty nice.... :thumb2:

God I love M1's and M1A's............ :worthy

thats what i really want, is an M1A, but they start new at about 1500 or so... while they are extremely accurate, they will be no match for an AR30 but the garand and M1A are probably the baddest rifles on the planet...the M1A only comes in .308 tho, i want a little more punch than that... gotta make up my mind at some point i suppose.. BD, ive never seen a tanker model, does the stock get altered at all? or just a shorter barrel?
